DIY Sectional Tutorial
First of all, I'd like to say hi to all of you fellow bloggers. Thanks for stopping by!
There will be plenty of time for introductions later... so let's get to the real reason you're here.
Salvaged design is what we're fostering and we're pretty passionate about it.
Check out the latest project:
The Roll-away Sectional
Here's a cheap, easy way to create a functional (and customizable!) sectional out of old doors. Casters on one "section" allow you to rearrange the sofa into a bed for unexpected visitors, lazy movie days, etc. Get ready to snuggle!
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Solid pine doors salvaged from a recent home renovation. |
- Solid wood doors- FREE
- Drill
- 6'' Wooden posts for legs (4) $24.00
- Brackets for affixing legs $18
- Casters (4) $20
- Wood putty
- Paint of choice and sealant or glaze
- Felt for the bottom of the legs, if needed
- Cushions $150
- Miscellaneous throw pillows
The low down:
Remove hardware from doors and fill in all holes with wood putty.
When dry, sand putty.
Affix 6 brackets to the bottom of your standing section using the drill.
Screw your leg posts into the brackets as tightly as possible.
Affix casters to the bottom of your rolling section.
Give both sections two coats of paint and finish with a clear top coat.
You're nearly done!
A friend who reupholsters old boat seats lent a hand in creating these custom cushions. He did an amazing job. This sectional is in a sun room, so I chose a soft white vinyl that looks like leather to accommodate for the pets, feet, etc. that it will likely encounter. Then, I scrounged my house, my sister's house, hell all my friend's houses for neglected throw pillows. My philosophy is the more variations in pattern, the better. We actually referenced another blog here: http://www.thecreativityexchange.com/2011/04/screen-print-paint-and-tape-gorgeous-pillows-2.html, to create the geometrical pillows you see in teal. (So easy and so amazing.)
I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome and the functionality of this piece is ALMOST as great as it is aesthetically. To all of my friends and family who got tired of sitting in beach chairs...
